Review: I purchased this book on recommendation from my husband because I was looking for something that was similar to Lord of the Rings. Homeland puts us in a world that has dark elves, fairies, orcs, dwarves, and other mythical creatures. However, the society that Salvatore created for the dark Drow elves is quite captivating and downright evil. Shortly after the introduction, we begin to follow Drizzt who is the son of Matron Malice. He goes through intensive training to become a Drow warrior and although the training is meant to help harden his soul, so that he can better serve the Spider Queen, he learns to despise the Drow society and wishes for escape from the torment. There were times while reading that I thought Drizzt may have become interested in the Drow ways, but I was pleased to discover that he keeps his strong and good heart all the way through the story. Homeland leaves a lot of room for storyline development and I can see the plot going in many different directions over the series. This book is filled with tales of action and betrayal that will leave you yearning to flip the page. I also found hope in this story that Drizzt will some how be able to show the Drow the error of their ways. Salvatore's scene descriptions left me fantasizing about the Underdark and what it would be like to exist in that world. I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys good fantasy!
Book Description: "Drow ranger Drizzt Do’Urden, first introduced in The Icewind Dale Trilogy, quickly became one of the fantasy genre’s standout characters. But Homeland first reveals the startling tale of how this one lone drow walked out of the shadowy depths of the Underdark, leaving behind a society of evil and a family who want him dead. It is here that the story of this amazing dark elf truly began."
