Review: While reading this novel, I was transported to a place that took my mind away from all of the daily struggles. I sincerely enjoy books that involve character transportation from our current world to another. It triggers my imagination and makes me envious of the characters. Due to my inability to put this book down and the fact that I truly felt as so I was the one who was being swept away, the reading immersion is impeccable and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for an escape read. The heroine, Lexi, is incredibly relatable as an 18-year-old woman who has a tragic past with the loss of both of her biological parents. Her step-mother treats her like dirt and she feels an incredible amount of responsibility to care for her younger half-brother. Lexi also nannies a young girl who lost her mother and their connection is admirable. Although I generally like Lexi, there comes a point when I started to find her annoyingly close minded and judgmental. She would repeat the same thoughts about Storm and his people, which limited the potential for her character to be more dynamic. Instead, she came across as biased and only having a one-track mind. Granted, readers get to see her develop immensely as time goes on, but there was definitely a stagnant period. Storm's character on the other hand is incredibly dynamic and the essence of every woman's bad boy fantasy. Overall, I enjoyed the character development despite the difficulty I had with Lexi. The plot of this novel is creative and whimsical. I really enjoyed understanding what Walters was trying to convey about pirates and I think that the society she created is fresh and contemporary. I did receive an advanced reader's copy of this book, so the editing was not quite where the published version is, but there was not a consistent amount of errors that made reading difficult. Her writing takes the point of Lexi, which I didn't mind because we were still able to bare witness to what Storm was feeling.
Recommendation: I recommend this to anyone who enjoys whimsical fantasy that also has steamy romance, adventure, and action!
