Review: If you are looking for a whimsical tale that will transport you to another time and place, then you will likely enjoy The Kiss of Deception. We first meet Princess Lia when she is preparing to marry a prince from another kingdom to solidify the nations' relationship. Within the first chapter, it becomes apparent that Lia is a strong willed young woman who will not follow through with something that she does not agree with. However, as the story unfolds we learn that she will put her pride aside if it means saving those she cares deeply about. Among adventure and fantasy, I would also categorize this novel as coming of age because there is so much character development, I could not minimize the growth that Lia and her supporting characters experienced on this journey. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book via Audible because Mary created a tangible world with the amount of description she provided in the scenes. There are some books that do not necessarily need as much scene development, but The Kiss of Deception was elevated because of the elaborate details that were included. When I listened to this novel, I could picture exactly what was happening in the characters' world and therefore, it took me away from mine. Among Lia's journey, she also finds a passionate form of love that kept me wanting to listen for more. However, as the title suggests, this novel also entails deception that will keep you engaged until the very end.
Book Description: "In a society steeped in tradition, Princess Lia's life follows a preordained course. As First Daughter, she is expected to have the revered gift of sight—but she doesn't—and she knows her parents are perpetrating a sham when they arrange her marriage to secure an alliance with a neighboring kingdom—to a prince she has never met. On the morning of her wedding, Lia flees to a distant village. She settles into a new life, hopeful when two mysterious and handsome strangers arrive—and unaware that one is the jilted prince and the other an assassin sent to kill her. Deception abounds, and Lia finds herself on the brink of unlocking perilous secrets—even as she finds herself falling in love."
